"O" Rings

You need that "O" ring for the seal it creates to insure that your oil is pumped through the filter and doesn't just squirt around the sides of the filter.

As to the old "O" ring - try looking on the inside end of the old filter - likely it was stuck down and it may not have been immediately apparant where it was when you went looking for it.

Hope this helps - I use 10-30 Motorcycle oil exclussively regardless of temperature - I buy my castrol at Walmart - cheapest source I have found.
